DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A SUB-DOMAIN, PARKED DOMAIN AND AN ADD-ON DOMAIN?

How to use a Sub domain

  • Lets say your domain is mysite.com.
  • You install a Message Board and put in in a directory called mysite.com/board/.
  • You can turn the directory board into a sub-domain by adding it as a sub-domain from your Control Panel.
  • Now you can access your Message board as either  mysite.com/board OR board.mysite.com
  • This costs you nothing and is free. All AskMorris hosting options offer Unlimited 'Sub-domains'

How to use a Parked Domain

  • You have two domains mysite.com and my-other-site.com.
  • mysite.com is the domain of your website and you want to add my-other-site.com.
  • You want them both to go to the same place. In other words, when someone types either www.mysite.com or www.my-other-site.com they will go to the same page(s) on your website.
  • AskMorris Gold Hosting accounts offer Unlimited 'Parked domains'
  • In order to use additional parked domains in your hosting account, you need to first purchase the domains from a registry (Not from AskMorris).

How to use an Add-On Domains

  • You have two domains mysite.com and my-other-site.com.
  • You want the two domains to be totally separate/independent websites.
  • In order to have additional add-on domains you need to purchase them from a registry.
  • Basically, Add-On domains give you the ability to host more han one web site under the same hosting account at at no extra cost to you.
  • Only AskMorris Platinum Hosting accounts offers this option
OK SO WHAT MUST I DO TO MAKE IT ALL HAPPEN?

Procedure - Parked and Add-On Domains
(THE ORDER IS IMPORTANT)

  1. Register the domain. (you will receive a username and password from the registry. Keep it safe).
  2. Make sure the Name Servers at the Registrar, point to the correct AskMorris DNS Server (After purchasing hosting with us you will receive the necessary server info. via email. Check your email but most likely it is the below.)
    • AskMorris Domain servers in listed order:
      ns1.clicksmartonline.com 64.131.74.38
      ns2.clicksmartonline.com 64.131.74.39
  3. Add the domain only once from your Control Panel as either a Parked or Add-On Domain by locating the Add-on or parked domains link in your control panel. (Trying to add it more than once can break things on your website).

The cPanel in your hosting account offers excellent Tutorials, information on how to use the necessary tools to control sub- addon- and parked domains. We strongly suggest you read those. There are also Video Tutorials. However, below we have collected some quick tips for you.
  • TIP: if you add a domain as a parked domain (or as an add-on) and change your mind and want to change it to the other flavor, simply login to your Control Panel and then locate whichever of add-on or parked domains it currently is and delete it. Once the domain has been deleted, you can safely add it back as the "other" one.

  • TIP: When you add an add-on domain, use the domain name as the folder name. This will be the folder it creates on the server for the "root" directory for this domain. Having it the same as the domain name makes it easy to identify if you have many folders.

  • TIP: To FTP directly to your new add-on domain use;
    • Server: domain-you-just-created.com
    • FTP username : username-you-just-created@domain-you-just-created.com
    • Password: the password you entered.

  • IMPORTANT: When adding add-on domains use a decent password. (Use the password strength meter to make sure it's 80% or higher)

Procedure - SUB-DOMAINS

  1. You can add a sub-domain whenever you like and there is nothing you need to register at the registry.

  2. Add the sub-domain(s) only once from your Control Panel.
